The Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell at its fastest rate in three years in December, but retail prices in both the furniture and floorcoverings sectors did the opposite.
While CPI dropped from 4.8 per cent to 4.2 per cent between November and December - the biggest monthly fall since 2008 according to the Office for National Statistics - both carpets and furniture prices rose.
ONS data shows furniture prices to have risen 0.5 per cent on November to leave December 2011's figure standing at 2.9 per cent overall compared to last year. Carpets and floorcoverings were 1.9 per cent higher month on month and 7.4 per cent up on the year.
The largest downward pressure on overall CPI came from petrol, gas and clothing.
