January furniture retail sales volumes rose by 2.3 per cent according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The figures - part of the official stats agency's broader retail sales data - were against strong comparatives for last year, when January 2011 sales climbed by 10.2 per cent.
Floorcoverings sales also rose - by 9.7 per cent in January - but that was against a backdrop of falling sales in each and every month of 2011, according to ONS.
Across all retail sales categories, ONS said sales volumes were up by 2 per cent on January 2011.
