HOME department store group Leekes has expanded its distribution capability after investing in a 46,000sqft extension of its South Wales distribution centre.

The privately owned retailer has increased its warehousing at Pontyclun by 34 percent to over 180,000sqft, in a move that will also see the creation of 25 new jobs.

Its investment — which was supported by the Welsh Government — follows its acquisition of Bristol furniture retailer Park Furnishers earlier this year and the introduction of online click and collect options.

The increased warehouse capacity facilitates quick-ship transportation of stocked furniture and other home-related produce to Leekes’ five home department stores or direct to customer homes.

Operations director Chris Leeke said: “The increased space created by the expansion to the warehouse will be invaluable to us. We will have more scope to store increased volumes of stock and ultimately fulfil customer demand more efficiently, effectively and in a more timely manner.

“We are particularly grateful to Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council for their efforts in supporting us as a significant local employer through both the planning process and by working with us to investigate what grant opportunities were available. We would also like to thank the Welsh Government for their assistance and access to grant funding which has made this project possible.”
