Nottinghamshire upholstery producer Whitemeadow more than doubled profits on the back of rising sales and a 60 basis point swing in gross margin.

The manufacturer — which acquired a new head office site this summer — grew sales by 20.6 per cent to £26.1m in the year to end December, building on 9.4 per cent growth in 2013.

Gross margin climbed to 29.6 per cent with profits at the pre-tax line for the privately owned company up 149.4 per cent to £934,944.

Staff headcount also climbed as the firm met rising demand, with average staff numbers rising by 43 to 292, with all the job creation within its production team.

Whitemeadow also manufactures its own sofa frames through its WM Frames subsidiary, which at the balance sheet date was consolidated into its main operating company.
