British furniture manufacturers enjoyed strong sales to France, Ireland and the Netherlands but it wasn’t enough to make up for weak demand further afield.

August furniture exports—across all categories and markets—dipped 1.3 per cent year-on-year to £62.9m according to HM Revenue & Customs.

Sales to Russia collapsed, from £3.5m last year to under £500,000 in August 2015, while one-off contracts in 2014 also impacted the total figure this time round. Furniture exports to Cape Verde, for example, totalled £654,865 in August 2014, but nothing at all in the same month this year.

Britain’s biggest export markets performed well, with sales to Ireland up 4.3 per cent to £12.2m; French exports up 37 per cent to £6.3m and Dutch exports up by half to £3.8m.
