Shoppers ventured out of town in greater numbers in September though the wider trend—for falling overall retail footfall—continued.

Retail park footfall was up 4 per cent last month, according to the BRC-Springboard Footfall and Vacancies Monitor, the highest growth figure since January 2014.

However, total retail footfall during the month was down 0.2 per cent against September 2014, dragged down by weak high street shopper numbers (-1.4 per cent) and those visiting shopping centres (-1.3 per cent).

Despite the overall decline, the month’s figures were an improvement on August 2015, which had seen a 1.6 per cent fall in year-earlier shopper numbers.
