Half year UK sales climbed at Carpetright despite the floorcoverings retailer accelerating the pace at which it closed stores.

Back in April 2011, the UK’s biggest floorcoverings retailer was trading from 539 stores across the country, spanning 4.51m sqft.

Since then, it has closed a net 101 stores, and reduced its footprint by 694,000sqft.

That’s an 18.7 per cent reduction in store numbers, and a 15.4 per cent fall in trading space across the UK. This means the average Carpetright store now spans 8,721sqft, compared with 8,375sqft back in April 2011.

We can expect further change in the months and years ahead, however, with Carpetright CEO Wilf Walsh saying he has been encouraged by the early trading performance of its four new concept stores.
