Furniture sales spiked for retailers in Ireland last month, according to official figures.

Data from the Central Statistics Office—Ireland’s equivalent of the Office for National Statistics—recorded a 15.6 per cent rise in furniture and lighting sales by value last month.

Volumes—the quantity of merchandise sold—climbed by an even sharper 22.1 per cent, the CSO said.

Furniture and lighting combined was one of just two categories to register double-digit percentage growth; the other being clothing, footwear and textiles (+10.5pc by value).

Total retail sales in Ireland rose 5.6 per cent by value against September 2014, with the volume of goods sold up by 8.6 per cent year-on-year.
