Promotions across living and dining, bedroom and upholstery supported year-on-year furniture sales growth at John Lewis last week.

The department store mutual said the category was up 6.1 per cent, as total Home directorate sales moved 4.6 per cent ahead of last year.

Within its Home figure, online sales were up 15.7 per cent.

Total sales across the chain in the seven days to 31st October climbed 5.6 per cent to £97.2m. Fashion was the top category, rising 10.4 per cent on last year, with Electricals and Home Technology sales up by 2.8 per cent.
