Third quarter sales lifted at national flooring chain Carpetright buoyed by promotional activity and the Boxing Day launch of interest free credit.

Sales in the UK rose 6.6 per cent in the 13 weeks to 24th January, with like-for-like revenue rising by 7.5 per cent.

Two UK stores closed during the period, leaving the estate here numbering 461, with a similar number closing overseas where sales dipped 0.8 per cent (up 1.7pc LFL).

Its promotional stance during the period will contribute to a full year decline in gross margin of between 100 and 150 basis points, Carpetright said.

CEO Wilf Walsh said: “In the UK, our continued focus on effective promotional activity and the introduction of an interest free credit offer from Boxing Day has delivered a like-for-like performance slightly ahead of the level experienced in the first half.  Sales in our Rest of Europe business have also continued to improve.”
