Building work for John Lewis’ new Chelmsford store began yesterday, with the department store chain marking the event with a groundbreaking ceremony.

Local dignitaries including the Mayor and Mayoress together with Councillors and the Chairman of Essex County Council attended the groundbreaking ceremony along with John Lewis officials.

John Lewis will bring 350 jobs to Chelmsford when its flexible format 90,000sqft three-storey shop opens in the town in late 2016. It will carry a full line offer including Home.

The cooperative is anchoring the new Bond Street retail development in the Essex town, and is one of 20 new shops slated to feature as part of the scheme.
