A balance of four in every five furniture stores saw growth in early January trading, according to business group CBI.

Its monthly Distributive Trades Survey — which gives a flavour of retail performance in the early part of every month — recorded a +77 per cent balance of furniture and carpet retailers in positive year-on-year territory.

January’s survey had 127 respondents though CBI doesn’t break down the number of those who sell furniture or flooring.

Overall, around 50 per cent of stores reported higher sales and about 10 per cent said revenues declined, giving a rounded balance of +39 per cent up on the same period last year.
