Home sales were up 7 per cent at John Lewis as md Andy Street lauded high-ticket categories in the final few days of January.

Seven day sales to 31st January climbed 4.8 per cent to £69.6m across the department store cooperative with Home and Fashion (+9.1pc) the strongest two directorates.

Andy Street said: “Home rounded off its best year for many with a cracking week in Furniture. Beds has been the star turn all year — reward for a perfect assortment. Gifts and Textiles also stood out.”

It was a better week for stores, with 15 of its 39 shops open more than a year beating last year’s sales figure. Online sales were up 18.7 per cent.
