carpetShowroomFormer Carpetright development director Martin Harris — son of the chain’s founder Lord Harris — is planning to launch a floorcoverings retail chain of his own.

Mr Harris left his post at the UK’s largest floorcoverings retailer last year after more than 20 years with the business. His departure was announced at the same time as that of his father and of the appointment of Wilf Walsh as CEO.

In an interview with trade journal Retail Week, Martin Harris said he would this summer launch a new — as yet unnamed — floorcoverings retail chain which he hoped would eventually reach 200 stores. Lord Harris’ involvement — if at all — is unclear.

He plans to pitch the business at more affluent customers than those targeted by Carpetright, and has drafted in Sir Harry Djanogly, who also served on the Carpetright board in the past, to chair the new business.
