Sofa chain DFS says grabbing share from local independents is behind its plan to pilot sub-5k sqft showrooms in urban centres and small market towns.

The soon-to-float upholstery chain said in its IPO prospectus that it is considering the roll-out of smaller format stores of between 2,000sqft–5,000sqft to capture further market share.

It will begin a trial of the format shortly, by taking a unit in the Westfield Stratford shopping centre by the Olympic Park in London.

DFS said it wants to open three to five stores per year moving forward, adding that it had identified around 20 further sites for potential 10–15,000sqft stores. DFS’ average store size is currently around 20,000sqft.
