East Midlands furniture distributor Birlea racked up 10 percent sales growth in 2016–17 and said it expected to make further top and bottom line gains this year.

Year to end October 2017 revenue reached £15.2 million for the Castle Donington based company, and has now jumped by a cumulative 67 percent in four years.

More growth is on the way, with turnover and trading profits for 2017–18 in an "extremely encouraging position" at the time its accounts were signed off mid-July, directors said.

Last year's profits declined 19 percent to £1.12 million, the result of privately-owned Birlea incurring higher admin expenses and its gross margin narrowing 30 basis points to 27.3 percent.

Total equity advanced to £5.7 million (2016: £4.6m).
